With both teams being members of SOC II, both teams desperately wanted a win to stake a spot in the conference. Both teams fought hard, but Northwest collected a physical, conference win.
Northwest forced a three and out on the first defensive possession and got to work early on offense. The Mohawks during the entire game rolled out in a double wing offense. This formation implements 3 potential running backs with all players cramped near the ball. It requires reliable offensive line play with small chunk plays to kill clock. This did set up 3 fourth and short situations for the Mohawk offense, but they would convert on all of them. Running this double wing offense to perfection, Northwest got on the scoreboard early and often.
Carter Runyon scored the first three touchdowns for the Mohawks with rushes of 6 yards, 64 yards, and 33 yards, respectively. Him and Colten Campbell’s heroics gave Northwest a 28 to 0 lead early in the third quarter.
With their back against the wall, Minford’s defense came up big forcing a fumble in Northwest’s 20-yard line to give the offense immediate red zone access. The Falcons would find the end zone for the first time on the night halfway through the third quarter off of a heroic scramble from quarterback Curtis Glenn.
Minford scored again in the fourth quarter, but the distance that separated the two teams was too much at that point in the game. Northwest would spoil Minford’s homecoming with a 35 to 14 road victory. The Falcons made a few big plays down the stretch with a blocked punt and two rushing touchdowns by Curtis Glenn.
But the Mohawks won this game in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Consistent short rushes to pick up first downs as well as consistent pressure on Midford’s offensive line helped Northwest get their first win against Minford in 20 years.
The Minford Falcons will look to bounce back next week against Portsmouth West. As for Northwest, they will try to build upon this momentum when they travel to Valley for a much-anticipated rivalry game.
