Tim Albin departs Ohio after four seasons to accept the head coaching job at Charlotte
< < Back toATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The University of North Carolina at Charlotte announced Sunday morning that Ohio Football Head Coach Tim Albin has agreed to become the school’s next football head coach. The move comes within less than 24 hours after Albin led the Ohio Bobcats to their first MAC Championship in 56 years.
Albin, the reigning MAC Coach of the Year, won the award twice in his four seasons as Ohio’s head coach. He leaves the Bobcats with an overall record of 33-19, including 23-9 in conference play. Albin also went undefeated in bowl games as head coach, winning the 2022 Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl and the 2023 Myrtle Beach Bowl. The team’s 38-3 victory over Miami (OH) on Saturday, led by Albin, was the largest margin of victory in MAC Championship Game history.
Albin has been on staff at Ohio since 2005 when he was one of College Football Hall of Famer Frank Solich’s original assistant coaches. Albin replaced Solich as head coach after his retirement following the 2020 season.
“I am beyond excited to begin this new journey at Charlotte and start the process of developing the 49ers into the championship-caliber program we all believe it can and should be,” Albin said per Charlotte’s press release. “I would like to thank Chancellor Sharon Gaber and Mike Hill for their trust and belief in our future together. I cannot wait to get started.”
Albin’s introductory press conference is scheduled for Monday at noon. It can be viewed on ESPN+ and Charlotte Athletics’ website. Albin has not made any public comments following his departure, nor has Ohio University released any official statement or remarks. An interim head coach has also not been named yet. He was not seen at the team’s celebration on College Green following their return to Athens from the MAC Championship Game.
