Boys and Girls Basketball: Busy week ahead for Buckeyes
< < Back to ?p=3427The girls’ regular season has come to an end and tournament time has come. As for the boys, they have a busy schedule ahead of them with two games this weekend. Both teams, who have struggled in the late on the offensive end, will need to successfully execute the ball if they want to come out with a win.
The Lady Buckeyes finished their regular season on a rough note, losing three of their last four regular season games, but they hope to get back in their winning ways in the first round of the tournament. They finished with an overall record of 13-7 and drew a six seed in the tournament to take on the 11-seeded, Ironton. Although the Lady Tigers ended up on the bottom end of the 14-team sectional, they did beat Zane Trace, a team that beat the Lady Bucks by 15 at the beginning of the season.
Nelsonville-York may have the better seed, but if they want a chance at beating Ironton, they need to not only score early on in the game, but also effectively use their post players, Shelby True and Madison Davis. The Lady Buckeyes have struggled in past games with getting behind early on. They have the ability to score and the defense to stop teams, so if they can put both of those together and find a happy-medium, they’ll have no trouble against Ironton. The Lady Buckeyes go to Jackson High School Thursday night to take on the Lady Tigers.
The boys lost a tough match against Vinton County, Tuesday night, but there’s no time to sulk because the Buckeyes take on Alexander Friday night and Athens Saturday night. Nelsonville-York lost by more than 15 points to the Spartans early in January. Alexander has only four wins on their season, but they are playing with more intensity lately and even put on an exciting game against Vinton County last week where they lost at the buzzer by two.
Saturday is Senior Night for the Buckeyes, and whenever Nelsonville-York and Athens get together, it’s sure to be an exciting one. Athens has only two losses in league-play, one of those losses being to Nelsonville-York. Last game, Casey Cox hit a three-pointer to send the game into overtime and it was all Buckeyes from there. If they want to defeat the Bulldogs again, they will need to come out with the same momentum as last time and strive for the consistency they have been lacking. The Bulldogs also have a game Friday night at home against Meigs.
As both N-Y teams head into the latter-half of the week, with playoffs on the line and an eventful Senior Night, winning is more important than ever.
