FRANKFORT, Ohio (WOUB) — The Unioto Shermans improved to 6-0 after a 45-0 win over the Adena Warriors Friday night in Frankfort.
Unioto entered this game with an incredible first half of their season: amassing an undefeated 5-0 record, averaging 47 points per game, while only allowing 4.2 points per game. Meanwhile, Adena started the season 0-2, but has since rattled off three straight wins, most recently defeating conference rival Paint Valley 27-19. This game had significant implications in the Scioto Valley Conference title race, with both teams entering this game 2-0 in conference play. This game would quickly emerge as a one-sided affair. Adena fumbled on their opening drive, and it only took two plays before Unioto made it 7-0 with a 30-yard Cody Braden rushing touchdown. The senior would strike on the next drive too, this time from six yards out to put the Shermans up 14-0.
Adena would convert a 4th-and-1 on their next drive, but failed to convert a 3rd-and-19 shortly after, forcing a punt to start the second quarter. Unioto again would not take long to score off of this – junior Jack Welch rushed the ball to the 17-yard line, then fellow junior Isaac Coy would pass the ball to senior David Long on the next play, who would hit the end zone to put the Shermans up 21-0. An Adena 3-and-out would set up a two-play Shermans drive, with senior Tye Woods scoring a 16-yard rushing touchdown to make the score 28-0. Adena would fumble the next play of their next drive, and it would again be a two-play drive with Henry Vallette scoring a touchdown to extend the lead to 35-0. Unioto’s Liam Mathey would tack on a field goal before halftime, meaning the teams would enter the break with Unioto up 38-0.
Fates would not change much in the second half. Tye Woods scored once more at the end of the third quarter, making it 45-0. Adena had a solid drive going near the end of the fourth quarter, but they came up short on 4th & 4, allowing the Shermans to kneel out the clock and seal the 45-0 victory.
Unioto continued their dominance of this matchup, as they’ve taken the last five meetings and shut out the Warriors in the last four. Shermans head coach Matt Hoops was appreciative of his team’s effort and continued success in this matchup, but was especially complimentary of his senior players. “We have 18 seniors that know the importance of every night,” said Hoops postgame, “whoever we’re playing … they just come out here and try to play the right way.”
Unioto will look to remain undefeated and claim their third straight shutout win as they return home next week to face the Zane Trace Pioneers. Meanwhile, Adena will travel to Williamsport next week and are looking to rebound against the Westfall Mustangs.
