River of Words: Jennifer Schomburg Kanke reads from ‘Little Stone, Little Stone,’ her latest collection of poetry from Sheila-Na-Gig Editions

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – On this episode of River of Words, host Wendy McVicker speaks with poet Jennifer Schomburg Kanke about her new collection, Little Stone, Little Stone.

The collection draws from Kanke’s experience with ovarian cancer and examines the language surrounding cancer, treatment and survivorship. Kanke discusses her experience with delayed diagnosis and how the collection addresses medical dismissal and ovarian cancer awareness. She also talks about researching and writing poems about other people who experienced ovarian cancer, expanding the collection beyond her own story. The conversation explores Kanke’s use of poetic forms, meter and rhythm and the writing processes that helped shape the book. Kanke also reads selections from Little Stone, Little Stone throughout the episode.
