In this episode of Echoes From the History Center, host Tom O’Grady talks with Athens-based historian Brian Koscho about Invisible Ground, a multimedia project he created and produces to engage people with the history of their communities. Using audio, augmented reality, visual elements and place-based storytelling, Invisible Ground brings the history of Southeast Ohio communities into the places where it happened.

Koscho discusses how his longtime interest in local history, audio storytelling and visual design eventually came together in the project, which combines historical research, oral history and technology to help people explore significant places throughout the region. Using the Invisible Ground app, visitors can stand at designated sites and use their phones to see historic photographs positioned within the present-day landscape while listening to stories connected to those places.

The conversation also explores Koscho’s interest in making local history accessible and encouraging people to look differently at the places they encounter every day. O’Grady and Koscho discuss how Invisible Ground uses technology and storytelling to connect the region’s past with its present-day communities.
