Thornville, OH (WOUB) — The Tri-Valley Scotties (7-4) traveled to face the Sheridan Generals (9-2) in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs and for the second time this season. The Generals would come out with the 38-35 win, advancing to the next round.
The Scotties would start with the ball first, and it would start the game at Tri-Valley’s own 20-yard line. Not much would happen in their opening drive, meaning this would give Sheridan a chance with the ball. The Generals would take a couple of minutes to make their way to the endzone with a run from SJ Shriner. It would take a few tries to complete the PAT due to flags, but in the end it was good.
The Scotties would respond right back with a touchdown of their own during their next drive. Quarterback Tyce Whiteman worked his way down the field with help from Leevi Wade and Logan Clapper. Wade was able to lunge his way into the endzone for the touchdown and tie the game at seven with five minutes left of the first quarter.
Whiteman, Shriner, and Reed Parkison would not let this tied game slide because on the next drive they were back to the endzone with a six-yard touchdown from Shriner. There was a call for unsportsmanlike conduct, but the touchdown was counted good, and the Generals took a 14-7 lead with under a minute left in the first.
Entering the second quarter, Tri-Valley had it at Sheridan’s 47 and would make their way down the field for Wade’s second touchdown of the night. This drive would take over four minutes of the quarter and would tie the game back up, this time at 14 each.
The next drive from both teams would end in a punt to the other, but right before halftime the Generals were making their way to the end zone, looking to take the lead. As they were in the red zone, there were multiple flags on both sides of the ball, and this would cause the Scotties to have an automatic first-and-goal at the 11. Sheridan could not make a touchdown happen in the zone, so they settled for a field goal and were able to take a 17-14 lead over the Scotties going into halftime.
Sheridan got the ball coming out of the half, and in two minutes they would extend their lead with a touchdown from Carson Harris. This put the Generals up 24-14. Tri-Valley could not make anything happen on their next drive and got stopped, forcing an interception from Stone Spiker.
The Generals were able to take the ball back on their own 47. Sheridan would march their way down the field and right before they were in the endzone, a flag occurred, holding from Sheridan. This put them first and goal at the 16. Whiteman ran to put the ball inside the five, and Logan Russell would top off the play with a touchdown, extending their lead to 31-14.
Tri-Valley would get back to another attempt to get on the board again. And they were able to get down the field from Spiker, Klapper and Wade topped it off with a second-and-goal touchdown. This would cut the Generals’ lead down to ten, 31-21.
Starting in the fourth quarter, Sheridan had the ball but had to punt it away. This would give the Scotties a chance to cut the lead even more. And with a touchdown from Klapper, this would cut Sherdian’s lead, now having the game at 38-35 with four minutes left in the game.
Sheridan would be able to hold onto their lead in the final drive by having a huge breakaway from Scottie players thanks to freshman Emmit Gilder. This would allow the Generals to take a knee to end the game, 38
Sheridan will now face third-ranked East Columbus Tigers (9-1) in the round two of the OHSAA Division III Region 11 playoffs.
