< < Back to west-virginia-veterans-survey-be-releasedWest Virginia lawmakers are awaiting results from an effort to survey the state's military and veterans.
Organizers say more than 1,200 people answered questions about such topics as health, work, education, retirement and family. The Legislature commissioned the study, enlisting psychologists and counselors from West Virginia University.
The House-Senate Select Committee on Veterans' Affairs will receive the findings at an interim study meeting Tuesday.
Officials say the results include signs of lower rates of alcohol, tobacco and caffeine use among veterans.
U.S. Census Bureau estimates show close to 170,000 West Virginians are veterans. That's more than one in 10 state adults. Just 11 states have a larger segment of veterans among their residents. More than two-thirds of West Virginia's veterans are 55 or older.
