Former Democratic Ohio Governor Ted Strickland is not seeking another term in the office he held from 2007 to 2011.

Strickland made the announcement in a statement issued Tuesday by the Ohio Democratic Party.

In the statement, he said the decision was a difficult one and he looked back "fondly" on his time as Ohio's 68th governor, but he will not run in 2014.

"Frances and I will continue to be politically active private citizens. We will continue to stand with working men and women to build a stronger Ohio — and to defeat anti-worker and anti-middle class legislation that may arise," said Strickland.

Strickland campaigned extensively for President Barack Obama's re-election efforts, including introducing the president during a stop in Athens.

Before becoming Ohio's governor, Strickland served six terms in Congress, representing the 6th District, which includes much of Southeast Ohio.

Strickland also posted the announcement to his Facebook page.
