Places and Regions

Today's Ohio towns and cities are on sites that were originally settled because of the natural resources in the area. Locations that had plenty of clean water, good soil to raise crops, and nearby building supplies to create shelters have always attracted human beings. Water is especially important. Plants, animals, and humans can only live a few days without any water. Water is used for many other activities such as cooking food, cleaning, and for recreation. In the past, water "highways"--rivers and lakes--made travel quicker and easier.
