April 4 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Dr. Tamanna Shah
Assistant Professor of Instruction
Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Ohio University

Demands for self-determination – the right to choose – emphasize justice, liberty, and freedom from authoritarian rule. As a global phenomenon, disputesover self-determination occur across all regime types for a distinct identity and self-governance. Although the United Nations Charter guarantees the rightto self-determination, not all self-determination movements receive similar support to achieve statehood. This talk will discuss the conditions under whichself-determination movements succeed or fail specifically in the context and geopolitics of decolonization.

Light refreshments served.
