Silvopasture Tour: Krusling Farm
Learn about silvopasture on a pastured sheep operation in Athens County!
This silvopasture tour will take place at Krusling Farm where the Krusling family raises 400 hair sheep on 90 acres of fescue clover pasture, plus 50 acres of rented ground for grazing annuals and 35 acres of unreclaimed limtestone gravel mine which is in the process of being converted to natives for grazing.
The Kruslings have established silvopasture by addition and subtraction across their farm. We will visit areas where they have planted purchased tree seedlings as well as areas where they have allowed for natural regeneration by mowing around tree saplings that come up on their own in the pastures. In fall 2024, they cleared a large wooded area at the back of their property and seeded it into a diverse pasture mix.
Attendees can expect to tour each of these silvopasture areas on the farm, learn about the primary motivations for establishing silvopasture, discuss water quality impacts, and consider tree protection methods, layout design & planting tips.
