The Lyceum Luncheon Brown Bag Speaker Series presents Dr. Trevellya Ford-Ahmed and stories about Another Quintessential Coal Miner’s Daughter

October 16, 2025 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Lyceum Luncheon Brown Bag Speaker Series presents Dr. Trevellya Ford-Ahmed and stories about Another Quintessential Coal Miner’s Daughter at noon on Thursday, October 16th at noon.

Dr. Tee, Professor Emeritus in Public Relations/Media Studies at West Virginia State University and currently serving as Communication and Media Relations Director for Mount Zion Black Culture Center got her start in a miner’s company town, near Charleston, West Virginia. The company town of Ward, West Virginia, was once a bustling coal mining community in eastern Kanawha County. Ward was home to the employees and families of the Kelly’s Creek Colliery Company, later known as the Valley Camp Coal Company.
Ford-Ahmed will share stories about life as a daughter of a Black coal miner in a white company town and other adventures following such an upbringing and a career in the Appalachian region.

The History Center’s Lyceum Speaker Series is a brown bag luncheon scheduled for the third Thursdays of the month at 24 West State Street in Athens. Due to ongoing construction projects at the History Center, parking is very limited, and visitors should come early to find such accommodations for their vehicles which may be a block or more from the History Center.
