The Music of the Carter Family

July 25 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Free
Flyer for an event focusing on the music of the Carter Family.
The Ross County Historical Society invites the public to an evening of music and history on Saturday, July 25 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Ross County Heritage Center, located at 45 W. Fifth St, Chillicothe, featuring a special performance and lecture by music historians Steve and Lisa Ball.
Admission is free, and all are welcome.
The Music of the Original Carter Family explores the life, legacy, and recording career of the legendary Carter Family, whose influence helped shape what is now known as country music. Often considered part of the genre’s “Big Bang,” the Carter Family’s remarkable sixteen-year career left an enduring mark on American musical history.
Through live music, storytelling, and historical insight, Steve and Lisa Ball will trace the group’s journey—from their formation and landmark audition at the famed Bristol Sessions to their rise to national prominence and the challenges that brought their career to an unexpected close at its peak.
The program also highlights the rich history behind many of the Carter Family’s songs, several of which originated in the mid-19th century. Attendees will gain a deeper appreciation for the music, the people behind it, and the lasting impact the Carter Family has had on generations of American musicians.
The program will be held at the Ross County Historical Society on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Admission is free, and everyone with an interest in music, history or Appalachian culture is encouraged to attend. L:ight refreshments will be served.
