The Ohio men’s basketball team suffered a potentially big hit Monday as rising sophomore guard Ryan Taylor was released from his scholarship.
Taylor’s reasons for leaving the program are currently unclear, but Ohio Athletics’ only statement was, “Ryan Taylor asked for a release, and it was granted.”
Ohio coach Saul Phillips told Jason Arkley of the Athens Messenger that Taylor made his decision on a “gut feeling”.
As a freshman, Taylor played in 29 games, starting 28 of them and averaging 8.1 points per game. The Gary, IN native showed flashes of his rather large potential several times last season. In the Bobcats’ season opener against Appalachian State, Taylor posted 21 points on 9-13 shooting. In addition to that performance, Taylor scored in double digits eight other times this past season.
Taylor initially committed to Ohio in May of 2014 after completing a year at St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy where he averaged 23 points and six rebounds a game.
