Trimble Cannot Grab First Win, Lose to Southern
< < Back to
The rough start to the 2011-12 campaign for the Trimble Tomcats continued Monday night when they fell to Southern 49-37.
The Tornadoes led the entire contest as host Trimble struggled early and were not able to come from behind. The Tomcats found themselves in foul trouble early when starting point guard Tia Savage was called for three fouls in the first quarter. The loss of their main ball handler combined with poor shooting created a 10 point deficit at halftime with Southern leading 25-15. The Tomcats were only 5-for-28 from the field in the first half.
The Tornadoes expanded their lead to 17 in the fourth quarter, but the Tomcats clawed back. A seven point outburst in only 15 seconds made the score 43-37 with only 3 minutes remaining. Unfortunately for Trimble they would not be able to score the rest of the way.
“I was proud with them not quitting,” Tomcats Head Coach Dave Richards said. “I think that’s something we have improved on.”
It was a sloppy contest for both sides; Trimble had 23 turnovers and the Tornadoes had 22. Fouls were also in abundance with officials calling 23 on the Tomcats and 18 on Southern.
Southern’s Courtney Thomas led all scorers with 14 and Jessica Riffle also reached double figures with 10. The leading scorers for the Tomcats were Demi Moore with 8 and Janena Cain chipped in 6.
Southern will try to create a winning streak when they travel to Federal Hocking on Thursday. Trimble also returns to action Thursday when they host Belpre.
