Athens dominates down low and beats Logan
< < Back toThe Athens Lady Bulldogs(6-4) took to their home floor tonight to take on a very good Logan Lady Chieftains(6-3) squad and it was a close game until the finish.
Athens pair of 6’1 forwards Elena Lein and Emma Stanley dominated the paint defensively as Athens played a 2-3 zone and dared Logan to try and penetrate it. The score was 9-9 after the first quarter, but Athens would slowly start to take control of the game by punishing defense and dumping it down low to Lein and Stanley multiple times.
By halftime, Athens opened up a four point lead, but keeping Logan in it was the play of Jackie McLane making two key three pointers in the second quarter and she finished with 9 points on the night.
In the 2nd half, Logan started to fall behind, going down by as much as 7 as the threes were not dropping. Luckily, Brooke Simons started to heat up for Logan. Simons hit 3 three pointers and finished the game with a team-high 13 points.
Athens also heated up behind the arc in the second half as freshman sensation Dominique Doseck hit multiple shots, including the three that put Athens up 41-37 late in the game. After that three, Athens never looked back as Elena Lein took a steal, drew an intentional foul, and made the layup.
Athens would go on to win the game 50-39 and hand Logan its third loss of the season.
The stars of the night for Athens were Dominqiue Doseck, who finished with a game-high 17 points, and Elena Lein who finished with 14 points and a multitude of blocks along with Emma Stanley.
This win puts Athens at 6-4 on the season and gives them some momentum heading back into league play after 2 straight losses. Athens travels to face the Alexander Spartans on Thursday, January 5th for their 4th league game of the season.
