Ohio University announced tonight that it will provide immediate layoff notices to 20 dining hall employees.

This came after a union rejected a memorandum of understanding that OU said would have avoided layoffs.

The university says American Federation of State, County and Muncipal Employees Local 1699 members voted down the memorandum by an overwhelming majority.

A news release goes on to say "As a result of the upcoming Nelson Dining Hall closure and the implementation of the Culinary Support Kitchen, there is a lack of work."

A university official says, quote, "We hope to recall employees in the fall when Nelson Dining Hall is reopened."
