Ohio Welfare Totals Down
< < Back toOhio's welfare rolls have seen an 18 percent drop over the past year, largely due to recipients booted from the program for failing to work or get job training.
Part of the drop, 36 percent, is attributed to failure to meet work requirements. Other reasons include paperwork errors, income increases or time limits.
Ohio began cracking down on those who aren't working or training after being fined last year by the federal government. The state stands to lose $130 million in welfare funding unless at least half of adults on welfare are working, looking for work or training by Sept. 30.
About 40 percent of able welfare recipients are working or in job training, up from 26 percent last year.
