“You can’t lose a game if you don’t give up a goal,” said Ohio goalkeeper Mattie Liston.

That is exactly what the Bobcats accomplished with strong defensive play against Youngstown State, defeating Penguins 1-0.

The defense played well, allowing only 14 shot attempts, on the way to its fifth shutout of the season.

Ohio played an exceptionally strong first half, Maggie Murnane had a goal and the defense quickly stopped any Penguin attack. Murnane, a junior forward, collected the ball with her back to the goal, turned and kicked a left-footed shot just 8:34 into the contest for her second goal of the season.

She executed perfectly. Murnane had a good performance with 7 shots and 4 shots on goal to add to her team’s 22 goal and 6 shots on goals.

Though they got off 22 shots, the team did not seem satisfied with their lone goal.

“It was not our strong point,” said OU goalkeeper Mattie Liston in reference to the team’s offense. Coach Strauss attributed the lack of goals to not having enough shots on frame.

Happy with her goal, but ever yearning to improve, Maggie Murnane said that she is focused on becoming a better finisher, and scoring more for her team.

Murnane, however, later commented that the goal was a step in the right direction in the process to improve their scoring

The second half came with the Penguins pushing the Bobcats a bit harder. Early on in the half, Youngstown just missed a shot by a few feet to the left of the net on a corner kick.

With eight minutes left in the game they failed to capitalize when Ohio’s goalkeeper briefly came out of the goal box.

The Bobcats head to Bowling Green on Sept. 21 to start MAC competition.
