Fundraiser To Feature Bluegrass, Boats, Barbeque
< < Back toUncle Buck's Riding Stable will serve up live music and food this Saturday during its first ever Pig Roast and Paddle.
The event, which is a fundraiser for the Raccoon Creek Partnership and the Athens Building Industry Association, includes canoeing on Lake Hope and music from Athens bluegrass group The Rarely Herd and Columbus bluesman Willie Phoenix.
Since 1992, The Rarely Herd have received over 120 regional, national and international awards and nominations, including 10 consecutive wins as "Entertaining Band of the Year" at the National Bluegrass Awards.
In addition to their nine album releases, the group has also made appearances on the CMT, TNN and GAC networks. This weekend's set at Uncle Buck's will be recorded for a future CD.
Blues artist Willie Phoenix has made a name for himself with countless performances throughout the Midwest. West Virginia entertainment paper Graffiti has described Phoenix as a "raging guitarist with a ton of attitude and stage presence."
Proceeds from Saturday's event will be used to support the printing and distribution of the newly developed Racoon Creek Water Trail map.
Created by Ohio University MSES student Karla Sanders, the map details public access points along the the creek, as well as historical sites, details about fish and wildlife and acid mine drainage treatment and reclamation sites.
"We need to raise about $5,000 to print the maps on a high quality, water resistant paper," said Amy Mackey, watershed coordinator for Raccoon Creek.
Saturday's canoeing activities get underway at 1 p.m. with OU vans providing transportation to and from Lake Hope at no additional charge. Equipment is also included, according to Mackey.
"The Raccoon Creek Water Trail Association will be bringing canoes, paddles, life jackets, and will provide lessons for inexperienced paddlers," she said.
The pig roast and concert will begin at 5 p.m. For ticket information and details, visit www.raccooncreek.org or contact Amy Mackey at mackey@ohio.edu.
