On Saturday, Sept. 22, local singer-songwriter Jesse James Russell performed two sets of original music at Insea Sound Shop in Nelsonville, Ohio, as part of the monthly Blue Room Sessions concert series.

On the third Saturday of each month, Insea Sound Shop owner Nick Collura presents a live showcase of local and regional talent at the shop's recording studio.

For those unfamiliar with Insea, a storefront of rare guitars, banjos and various types of musical gear is located at the front of the building, while a door at the back leads to Insea Recording Studio, a full-fledged recording space complete with control room, live room and isolation booths.

The Blue Room Sessions are held within the "live" room of the studio, where basic recording usually takes place. The space isn’t huge, but it’s large enough to pack in about 20 audience members and a handful of musicians.

The sessions are broken into two sets at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Jesse James Russell’s first set was intimate, with an audience made up of Russell’s family and close friends.

Russell performed songs he wrote for his loved ones, particularly his children. His songwriting style could be compared to Dave Mathews, especially in his use of fast, rhythmic strumming on his acoustic guitar and his wide vocal range.

Russell also utilized his looping guitar pedal to keep his rhythm guitar track playing underneath his quick picked acoustic leads. The song "Try," featured in the video above, showcases this skill.

Russell’s second set was better-attended with family and friends, as well as local music fans, as is usually the case with The Blue Room Sessions.

The next Blue Room Session is slated for Saturday, Oct. 20 with Collura’s own band, Without Papers. Tickets are $10, which includes admission to both the 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.sets.
