One thing was certain tonight; the Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes prepared for their game against the Wellston Lady Golden Rockets extensively, which showed in a 65-51 win.

After gaining confidence in their first win over Sheridan, the team was ready to take on their rival opponent in the Lady Golden Rockets.  Aggressive play and an effective offense all contributed to the Nelsonville-York victory.

The first quarter was back and forth filled with fast breaks and rough jump balls.  This is when Angela Mead took control of the court and started making the effective plays. Mead ended the game with 17 points.

At the first time out the Lady Buckeyes led 10-6.  Nelsonville-York’s man-to-man defense pushed the Lady Golden Rockets to minimal scoring and ended the quarter with a led of 16-11.

Brooke Breeze, who ended the game with 10 points, came out hot in the second quarter and got the momentum going for the Lady Buckeyes.

Wellston did put up a fight, however. Sami Ousley had 22 points for the Lady Golden Rockets and was effective under the basket.

Despite Ousley’s offensive production, the Lady Buckeyes’ Shelby True also worked for points on the block and ended the night with 15 points and seven rebounds.  The Lady Buckeyes led at the half 29-18.

During the third quarter, Angela Mead’s ball handling and playmaking kept the Lady Buckeyes calm and collected.  The Lady Golden Rocket’s started throwing up long threes and not working plays.  The Wellston team started a full-court press with 1:30 to go in the third, but N-Y worked out of the press with a relaxed demeanor.  The third quarter ended with Nelsonville-York on top 47-33.

Nelsonville-York went 25-of-31 from the free throw line, while the Lady Golden Rockets went only 8-of-16.

The Lady Buckeyes had four blocks on the night, with three by Breeze on the same possession.

The 2-0 Lady Buckeyes seek another victory Saturday against Zane Trace.
