Athens wrapped a perfect TVC-Ohio campaign with a 65-42 victory over rival Alexander on Thursday and came one step closer to beginning tournament play in a week.

A No. 3 seed in the upcoming Division II District Tournament, Athens built upon the success it has already achieved in the 2012-13 season, clinching an outright league championship without dropping a single game to a conference opponent.

The girls got off to a hot start yet again Thursday, building a 10-0 lead just three minutes into the game. But while Athens owned the beginning of the quarter, Alexander controlled the end. The Lady Spartans ended the first quarter on a run to pull within 6 points, but Athens led after one, 20-14.

Athens used the next two quarters to pull away.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored Alexander over the middle two quarters, 35-17, to take a 55-31 lead into the fourth quarter. Coach Wayne Horsley began rotating in his reserves late in the third quarter.

Dominique Doseck created countless opportunities for herself and her teammates, slashing to the basket for layups and dishing no-look passes to open teammates. She finished with 20 points, six assists and four steals despite sitting on the bench for the entire fourth quarter.

Olivia Harris was active on defense as well with four steals. She also had 13 points.

“We put a lot of emphasis on (defense) in practice,” Harris said. “Our goal is to hold every team under 50 because if we do that then we can just take our time on our offense and slow things down.”

The Lady Bulldogs are 17-0 when allowing fewer than 50 points to opponents this season.

Athens’ 65 points Thursday was the second-highest scoring output of the season.

Athens (18-2) closes its regular season Monday at Logan. The Lady Bulldogs play their first tournament game against Sheridan Feb. 14 at Meigs High School.
