Tomblin Pushes For Review Of Middle Schools

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is moving ahead with his plan to bolster West Virginia's middle schools.
The governor commissioned a 10-month review of the state's middle grades with an executive order Monday.
The review follows up on findings by the Southern Regional Education Board. Among other recommendations, the multistate panel says middle schools should do more to start students toward college and career readiness.
Tomblin's order seeks ways to make that and other findings a reality. His 19-member commission will include two state school board members, two teachers and a principal from middle schools, and five citizens including two representatives of teachers' organizations. State higher education officials will also be on the commission.
The executive order is part of a push to improve public schools that also includes pending legislation.
