The West Virginia University law school is hosting a free conference on policies that could stimulate demand for natural gas and stabilize domestic prices.

The event begins 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and features more than a dozen experts from the public and private sectors, including the president of the American Gas Association and state Commerce Secretary Keith Burdette.

Law school Dean Joyce McConnell says the responsible use of shale gas resources is a pressing issue for the region and the nation. She says the Center for Energy and Sustainable Development was created for such discussions.

But center director James Van Nostrand says industry has been too successful for its own good: Technological advances have created an oversupply, and gas prices have fallen to levels that jeopardize future development and tax revenues.
