The recruiting season is in full swing for Ohio baseball coach Rob Smith. With his first season as head coach nearly complete, Smith received two commitments Sunday for the 2013 class.

The Bobcats’ program will welcome JUCO pitcher Nick Nauracy and St. Ignatius shortstop Tyler Finkler to the team next season. Finkler will join a squad that loses its senior shortstop, Dan Schmidt.

Schmidt has started all 50 games for the 13-37 Bobcats this season. Schmidt’s bat will be missed from the middle of the order. He has maintained a .269 batting average along with a team-high five home runs this season.

Schmidt’s fielding has struggled, though, as the shortstop committed a Mid-American Conference-high 23 errors this season, which is a .907 fielding percentage.

Under Finkler’s leadership, the St. Ignatius Wildcats have had an 18-6 record this season. He demonstrates a great fielding ability, consistency with the bat and great baseball instincts at the shortstop position.

Finkler visited Ohio University on Sunday and accepted Ohio’s baseball scholarship.

The St. Ignatius baseball program has had great success under head coach Brad Ganor, as Finkler becomes one of the 50-plus players to continue their baseball careers at the collegiate level.
