Deer hunters would see extended hunting hours and new limits on the number of deer they could kill statewide under proposed rules before an Ohio legislative panel.

The statewide bag limit on deer would be cut to nine from 12 under the rules, which would set county limits instead of dividing the state into zones with limits.

Those county limits would vary according to the regulations the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review planned to examine Wednesday.

Hunting hours would be extended 30 minutes past sunset for all deer firearms seasons, making the hours the same as archery season.

The state's natural resources department says the average hunter shoots fewer than two deer annually.

If approved, the rules would take effect for the 2013-2014 hunting seasons.
