Rio Grande Women’s Soccer captured its first victory of the season defeating Point Park (Penn.) University 1-0 in its home opener Saturday at Evan E. Davis Field. Sophomore Courtney Young gave the RedStorm (1-1) their one and only goal of the day.
Throughout the first half, both teams struggled to put the ball in the net. Leaving the board scoreless at halftime, Rio head coach Callum Morris had some adjustments to make.
In the 63rd minute, Young slipped behind Pioneers’ defender to field the ball and beat out goalkeeper Mackenzie Pinto to give the RedStorm their first goal of the game.
Junior keeper Allison Keeney turned away five shots during the second half to notch the shut out against the Pioneers.
The RedStorm return next weekend as they host Marge Evans Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Friday’s match against Union (Ky.) College will kick off at 7 p.m.
