A man facing charges of shooting his wife while she slept reached a plea agreement this morning. He was set to go on trial for the offense.

The Athens County Prosecutor's Office recommended a sentence of four years in prison for Jerry Lewis, according to the agreement entered into by the office and Lewis.

About two hours after jury selection was supposed to begin, Judge Alan Goldsberry came to the courtroom to explain that a last-minute deal had been brokered.

"Mr. Lewis has requested an amount of time to get his personal affairs in order before he is sentenced," Assistant County Prosecutor Michael Prisley told the court.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 27.
