Rio Picks Up Second MSC Win
< < Back to rio-picks-second-msc-winThe Rio Grande RedStorm (6-10, 2-8) captured their second Mid-South Conference victory of the season when they defeated the Bluefield Rams in straight sets, 25-15, 25-20, 25-16.
Despite a slow start in the opening frame, the RedStorm rolled the Rams. With a 15-10 lead, Rio Grande took 10 of the last 15 points to win the opening set.
In the second game, the RedStorm jumped out to a 13-6 lead, however, Bluefield was not giving up. The Rams went on an 8-1 run to tie the score at 14-14. But the RedStorm put an end to the run and the game scoring 11 of the last 17 points to take the second frame.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair between the RedStorm and the Rams. Each answered the others run until Rio Grande got some separation with a 17-13 lead. But the Rams went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to just a point. However, the RedStorm rolled the Rams ending the set on an 8-0 run to take the set and the match.
“I’ve talked about the depth of our bench before and I think tonight was a great confidence-builder for all of our reserves,” Rio Grande head coach Billina Donaldson said.
Sarah Martin came off the bench and had 10 assists for the RedStorm.
Game-high statistical leaders for the RedStorm included Betsy Schramm with 11 kills, Kayla Briley with 14 assists and Nicole Ogg who dug out 14 of the Rams’ attacks.
The RedStorm will be back in action on Saturday at the Asbury Tri-Match when they take on West Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. and Asbury University at 5 p.m.
