Former University Commons Employee Charged With Stealing
< < Back to former-university-commons-employee-charged-stealingA former employee of University Commons apartment complex is now facing charges of allegedly stealing more than $82,000 from the complex in the span of six years.
Grace Maxine Young pleaded innocent to one count of grand theft on Sept. 4, the same day she also filed an affidavit of indigency to receive appointment of a public defender for her case.
Young, 68, was indicted by an Athens County grand jury on Aug. 12, according to court documents.
The prosecution alleges that Young stole $82,652.50 in funds from the apartment complex on South Shafer Street between May 2005 and April 2011.
The investigation began after the business owner uncovered evidence of the theft, according to County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn.
“This investigation took almost two years to complete,” Blackburn said.
Young appears to have no previous felony criminal history, based on a search of the Athens County Common Pleas database.
A status conference in the case is scheduled for Oct. 9, with a pre-trial scheduled for Nov. 13 and a jury trial currently scheduled for Dec. 17.
