Business Group Urging Adoption Of Common Core Curriculum Standards
< < Back to business-group-urging-adoption-common-core-curriculum-standardsAn influential business group is asking the Ohio House education chairman to kill or sideline a proposal to block implementation of multi-state learning standards known as the Common Core.
The appeal from Ohio Business Roundtable CEO Richard Stoff to Education Chairman Gerald Stebelton came in a letter Wednesday.
Stoff said the standards are "common sense and reasonable" and "afford local control and flexibility." He maintained higher standards are needed to help Ohio and America compete.
Stoff's letter was timed to state Rep. Andy Thompson's sponsor testimony on the bill before Stebelton's committee. Critics worry the standards could limit academic freedom and increase federal government's education role.
Stoff told Stebelton he has read the guidelines "cover to cover" and finds nothing required "that we wouldn't want our children to know."
