OU-L Production Brings New Meaning To Classic Novel

Two Ohio University Lancaster students who are part of OUL Theatre’s production of To Kill a Mockingbird say the play has deepened the meaning of the classic novel for them.
“There’s so much to this story,” said senior Shannon Webb, who plays the part of Jean Louise Finch. “Harper Lee does such an amazing job telling such a deep, meaningful story. It’s an amazing play.”
Harper Lee’s book was published in the early 1960s and won the Pulitzer Prize. The story is about a lawyer, Atticus Finch, in a racially divided Alabama town in the 1930s. Finch agrees to defend a young black man who is accused of raping a white woman.
OUL Freshman Jordan LeuVoy plays the role of Atticus Finch. He is thrilled to be a part of this production.
“To Kill a Mockingbird was one of my favorite books in high school,” said LeuVoy. “I know it’s not often that a book you are required to read becomes one of your favorites, but I just found the story so meaningful.”
For OUL Theatre Director Victor Jones, this production fulfills a longtime goal.
“I have always wanted to do To Kill a Mockingbird. It was one of the first shows I was cast in professionally when I did my college internship. I was Reverend Sykes,” he explained. “I think the show is beautifully written with a wonderful message.”

The second Fall Semester show for OUL Theatre will be Miracle on 34th Street, Dec. 5–8.
