South Zanesville's mayor who was also one of the village's firefighters has died in the line of duty.

Firehouse.com and media reports say Terry Richard Guss died Sunday afternoon two days after falling from a running board of a fire truck striking his head on a concrete floor.

Initially Guss was reported to be talking and experiencing little pain when he was taken to the hospital following the Friday accident but CT scans revealed enlarging brain bleeds requiring emergency surgery.

Guss was removed from life support Sunday and died around 1 p.m.
