The Alexander Spartans had a busy week of basketball. Between the boys and girls varsity teams, there were a total of five games played over the course of the week. Out of those five, four were on the road. Both teams had to play away from home this week, and the girls team seemed to fare with that task better than the boys.

The Lady Spartans opened the week with a home game on Dec. 16 against River Valley. Alexander was able to get the victory by a final score of 55-41.

On Thursday, Dec. 19, the ladies continued their winning ways as they traveled to Meigs to take on the Lady Marauders. The Lady Spartans were able to dominate the game, coming away with a 69-41 victory. Defense was the key in this game as Alexander was able to force 21 turnovers in the second half alone. Leah Richardson was able to hit some big shots as she contributed 24 points to the Spartans’ effort.

Alexander then traveled to Marietta College to take on South Webster on Saturday, Dec. 21. Despite great effort and hustle all game, the Lady Spartans couldn’t keep up with their opponents, losing by a score of 65-42.

The Lady Spartans came away from the week with two solid wins and a good performance against South Webster. They now have a whole week off for Christmas as they prepare for their game this Saturday when they travel to Amanda to take on the Lady Aces.

The boys team had a very different week. Their week started off on Tuesday, Dec. 17 with a trip to Athens High School to take on a very good Bulldog team.

The Spartans kept the game close until midway through the third quarter. That’s when the Athens offense caught fire. The Bulldogs were led on an 18-7 run by sophomore Ibi Watson, who hit three in a row from behind the arc on the way to his 24 point, 12 rebound double-double. The Spartans were led by junior Jordan Moseley, who scored all 13 of his points in the first half. Moseley was keeping his Spartans in the game, but in the second half, Athens came out determined to shut him down.

On Friday night they traveled to Nelsonville-York to take on the Buckeyes. The Spartans fought hard but couldn’t pull out the win, as they lost by a score of 61-47.

Despite the 14-point defeat, the game was much closer than the score reflects. Alexander was down 12-0 early, but fought their way back to within one in the second quarter. The Spartans battled hard the whole game but just didn’t have enough to come all the way back. They were led by sophomore Seth Richardson, who finished with 20 of the team’s 47 points.

The boys will have a nice break over Christmas week before back-to-back games against Federal Hocking and Amanda.

With another week of basketball down, both teams will have a nice break to prepare before getting back at it later in the week.
