Athens County Named Certified Local Government for Historic Preservation

The city of Athens has been designated as a Certified Local Government for Historic Preservation.

The recognition, jointly administered by the National Park Service and the Ohio Historic Society's Historic Preservation Office.

Athens City planner Paul Logue says achieving CLG designation was a stated goal in the city's comprehensive plan.

Communities must be nominated to the National Register of Historic Places and have a community-based participation program encouraging historic preservation, as required by the National Historic preservation Act.

Athens is the 61st comminity in Ohio to the receive the designation since the program was founded in 1985.
