Health agencies will be going door-to-door next week to survey residents in nine West Virginia counties affected by a January chemical spill.

Officials from the state Bureau for Public Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and volunteers from the West Virginia University School of Public Health will ask randomly selected households about their health concerns during the spill.

The survey will take place next Tuesday through Thursday. Each household will be asked to complete a short questionnaire.

State health officer Dr. Letitia Tierney says the results will help improve the response to future emergencies, including effective communication with the public.

After the Jan. 9 spill of a coal-cleaning agent at Freedom Industries along the Elk River, 300,000 residents were told to not drink their tap water for days.
