Toddler And Father Die In Truck Accident

A 19-month-old child and his father died as a result of an automobile accident Friday afternoon in Athens County.

Tyler H. Young of Athens was restrained in his child safety seat when a 1999 Nissan pickup truck driven by his father, Darrell J. Young II, 24, also of Athens, crashed off Route 56 near Union Hill.

According to the State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 12:44 p.m. when the westbound vehicle went off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

Darrell Young was ejected from the truck and sustained serious, life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Grant Medical Center in Columbus via medical helicopter.

A representative with Grant told The Messenger Friday afternoon that Darrell Young was listed in serious condition and later that evening the highway patrol confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries.

The area of Route 56 close to the crash was closed for approximately 20 minutes while emergency service personnel processed the scene.

A trooper told The Messenger that the accident is still under investigation.
