The state says prison employees and inmates pitched in to help deliver thousands of gallons of water to residents of a southeast Ohio community after a pipe leak cut their supplies for several days.

The break affected around 3,000 people on the water system for Gallipolis.

Employees at Pickaway Correctional Institution in Orient worked all night last week to process enough water at the prison's beverage processing system, which normally produces milk for state prisons.

Workers and inmates delivered 31,000 gallons of water over the weekend to a Gallipolis distribution center coordinated by the state Emergency Management Agency.

Officials said Tuesday that Gallipolis was beginning to refill its reservoir and hoped to lift a boil advisory later that day.
