Ohio To Get New Area Code To Meet Phone Demands
< < Back toPeople who live in the 740 area code will have to dial 10 numbers for local calls next year as a new area code is established.
The 220 area code is needed in a 30-county region that includes central and southeast Ohio because available 740 numbers are expected to run out in April, The Columbus Dispatch reports. Both 740 and 220 will cover that region in what officials call an overlay plan used successfully elsewhere.
Callers can use seven or 10 numbers for local calls for six months starting Sept. 20 but will need to dial the area code after that.
The 614 area code that covers Columbus is expected to have the same problem in late 2016. A 380 area code will be added there.
