Parkersburg South Puts On A Show For Home Fans, Defeat Warren 49-7 [VIDEO]
< < Back toIn a matchup that has given fans close games over the last several years, the Parkersburg South Patriots put on a show for their home crowd on Friday as they rolled over the Warren Warriors by a score of 49-7.
Leading 21-7 at halftime after scoring two touchdowns in a five-minute span late in the second quarter, Parkersburg South (3-1) took control and they never looked back.
The Patriots unloaded their offensive arsenal both on the ground and through the air as they piled up 449 total yards. Junior quarterback Garrett Gilkeson led the Patriots under center as he tore up the Warriors secondary all night.
Gilkeson threw three of his four touchdowns in the first half and finished the game going 15-22 for 273 yards through the air.
Patriots’ running back Brendon Schwendeman channeled his inner Darren Sproles, as the versatile senior racked up 115 total yards and three touchdowns on the night.
Parkersburg South and their defensive front 7 were very impressive on the line as they held Warren to only 141 total yards. The Warriors struggled from the start as they had three 3 & outs on their first five drives.
Warren (1-3) didn’t get on the board until 1:12 left in the second quarter, when running back Jared Isner carried the ball down the right side line for 37 yards into the endzone. That was the only six points Warren accumulated all night.
Quarterback Andrew Henthorn had a game to forget as he went 7-12 for 49 yards and two interceptions. Isner was the only sign of life for this Warriors offense, as he totaled 68 yards on the ground and a touchdown.
Warren tried to gain momentum early on in the third as Henthorn threw an 86 yard touchdown, however a block in the back would negate that score and Warren would eventually give the ball back to the Patriots and their red hot offense.
Gilkeson would capitalize on that Warriors error and take the game out of reach as he connected with junior wide receiver Cody Boggs for a 21-yard touchdown. With the score being 35-7, Gilkeson’s fourth and final touchdown made sure any life left in the Warriors was exhaled.
These two teams have met five times in the past seven seasons, with an average margin of victory of only 4.4 points per game. This was the largest margin of victory Parkersburg South had since 2009, when the Patriots defeated Winfield by a score of 55-7.
Parkersburg South will get a bye in Week 5, giving them extra time to prepare for their Week 6 matchup with Point Pleasant (4-0).
