A committee overseeing Ohio's emergency radio communication system is getting an update on a plan to place the radios in schools.

The goal is to allow schools to use the Ohio Multi-Agency Radio Communication System to alert first responders that police are needed.

The MARCS steering committee is scheduled to discuss that and other issues at a meeting Monday in Columbus.

The radio system, overseen by the Ohio Department of Administrative Services, uses wireless technology to allow first responders to send and receive clear, reliable communications throughout Ohio.

More than 1,200 public safety and service agencies use nearly 48,000 MARCS voice units and more than 1,800 mobile data units.
