A new federal report shows that nearly 197,000 Ohioans could lose about $576 million in health insurance subsidies this year in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The figures released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shows the potential impact of the case. It threatens the future of President Barack Obama’s health care law in some three dozen states, including Ohio.

Health overhaul opponents argue that subsidies are illegal in states where the federal government took charge of sign-ups.

Federal health officials say 84 percent of Ohioans enrolled in the marketplace – or 196,846 residents – qualified for an average tax credit of $244 per month.

According to the report, 234,341 Ohioans selected health plans or were automatically re-enrolled in coverage as of Feb. 22.
