The Africentric Nubians used their superior size, depth and defensive pressure to win 55-47 on Tuesday and put an end to the Tomcats’ perfect season.

The Nubians were led by Diontae Saunders and Jaquan Harrison, who both led with six points going into the second quarter. Harrison ended the night with a game-high 21 points and four steals.

Despite the big night and great start by the two Africentric players, Trimble showed that it was not going down without a fight in the second quarter. The Tomcats went on a 10-0 run in the middle of the second and only allowed the Nubians to score 10 points in the entirety of the quarter.

Bryce Guthrie led his team into halftime with 11 points and finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Thanks mainy to his effort — and the defensive pressure by the Tomcats — Trimble led 31-28 at the half.

Bench scoring became the focus in the second half, as the Nubians’ bench scored 17 in comparison to none by Trimble.

Africentric used that bench production to get the lead back, it never looked back. The third quarter was all in the Nubians’ hands after they outscored Trimble 16-6, which left the Tomcats facing a major deficit heading into the fourth.

Trimble had many opportunities to get the lead back, but fell short each time.

After three fouls were called on the Nubians within a minute, the Tomcats were only able to get two points from the foul line. Africentric didn’t make any field goals in the last five minutes, but Trimble was still unable to close the gap.

After multiple fouls and free throws, the Nubians ended Trimble’s undefeated season and will now move onto the Regional Final.

Africentric will go on to face Harvest Prep on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
