COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The State Highway Patrol says 14 people were killed on Ohio’s roadways over Memorial Day weekend – one more than last year.

The patrol says three fatalities were related to impaired driving. Four of the 14 people killed between Friday and Monday weren’t wearing seat belts.

The patrol made 544 arrests for impaired driving, down nearly 29 percent compared with last year. The 5,500 seat belt violations this year also were down nearly 25 percent from the same period in 2014.

Memorial Day marked the end of a weeklong seat belt initiative among troopers from Ohio and five surrounding states.

Auto club AAA said more Ohioans were expected to travel over this year’s holiday weekend, spurred by more disposable income and lower gas prices than in recent years.
