COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio education officials are starting work on a new series of tests to be administered to students starting in the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Richard Ross said Wednesday that the state has contracted with the American Institutes for Research, or AIR, on developing the assessments in English/language arts and math that will be used in the 2015-16 school year. Officials say the tests will be in place in time to guide teachers in classroom instruction, and the content will align to Ohio’s state learning standards.

After an outcry from parents in Ohio and across the country, the state has dropped and defunded tests from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career, or PARCC.

A new law requires replacement tests to be shorter and to returns results faster.
