West Muskingum (1-2, 1-2) overcame a defensive battle in Zanesville Saturday night to beat rival John Glenn Little Muskies (0-3, 0-1) 13-7.

Wide receiver Cameron Strauss played hero for the Tornadoes, hauling in a 55-yard reception with only 90 seconds remaining. The catch capped off a productive half from Strauss which saw him bring in four catches for 99 yards.

To put that in perspective, Gunner Hazen only completed one pass to the rest of his receiving core for three yards during the second half.

The first half of the contest, however, produced few offensive fireworks. John Glenn and West Muskingum were unable to find the red zone for the entire half. Three and outs as well as turnovers paved the way for a scoreless first half.

John Glenn made it harder on itself, coughing up four turnovers and failing to produce any form of momentum. The Little Muskies were held to  220 total yards.

.“The defense played phenomenal, this is the best job tackling we’ve done all week,” head coach Jeremy Katchem said. “We challenged our defensive backs this week to step up and I tell you what, I am really proud of them.”

Last season, the Tornadoes were up 10-7 with a minute left in the contest. John Glenn was able to convert on fourth and 12 allowing for a last-second score.

Katchem had a bitter taste in his mouth after last season’s matchup and was pleased to have redemption.

“For 365 days, we had the worst feeling in the world and it was our turn to repay the favor and send them home with that.” Katchem said.

West Muskingum will return to the gridiron on Friday when it travels to Maysville (3-0, 3-0). John Glenn will host Sheridan.
