In the mid-1960’s two couples traveling in the Point Pleasant area, reportedly say a large white creature with Red Eyes that was 7 feet tall with a ten foot wingspan tailing the car and the legend was born. Many others reportedly saw the creature until the Silver Bridge collapsed on Decemeber 15, 1967 killing 46 people. After the collapse, very few sightings were ever reported again adding to the controversy and mystery surrounding the Mothman. In 2002, a movie starring Richard Gere based on the 1975 John Keel novel, The Mothman Prophecies, was made and since that year, Point Pleasant has hosted the Mothman Festival to bring locals and travelers alike into the Point Pleasant area.
