COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio’s prisons director has received a first-ever national award for innovation named for the late director of Colorado’s prison system.

The 2015 Tom Clements Innovation Award was given this week to Gary Mohr, the director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

The award from the Association of State Correctional Administrators honors Clements, who was killed at his doorstep in 2013 by a former inmate. The inmate had been released after spending much of his sentence in solitary confinement.

Mohr was a close friend of Clements who had spoken with him the day before he was killed.

Mohr has worked in corrections for 41 years. He has led efforts to reduce Ohio’s inmate population by improving ex-offenders’ transition back into society.
